I'd be fine with paying 80 a month to cover dsl/phone combo. Plus this number is easier to pay with twenties....

Then we could have phone and a wireless network. I'm sure we could piece together a computer between the members or a laptop for use at the club.

I say we have a poll and see if there are a lot of objections to an increase in dues. I think it is worth the extra 5 dollars to have a phone (because how useful is a club if you can't check who's there), and internet would be a very useful as well.

Agreed. I'd almost prefer a voluntary $5/month donation from all those in favor of having internet/phone hook-up. I'll bet the list of donors would be: David, Jayme, Matt, and myself. There's $20 per month already toward expenses. Also, having a 21st century communication system might increase visitor attendance paying the $10 guest fee so we'd be very close to covering the tech nut.

P.S. I'm testing the Sirius antenna today, but I hear Pandora is pretty slick.

I'm surprised that there wasn't a rake from the poker games! Seems like a good idea to fund it. I would also be fine paying $5 for inet also.

I don't think DSL is the way to go. I've heard too many bad stories about horrible upload speeds.

All right Mr. OneArmed, can you secure a quotation for a good price on a Comcast or other cable modem service and suggest a cheap/free IP Telephony option. Crap, Gary Eakes had some cool software for phone calls. Schmooz or something or other...

I think dsl is just fine (not quite as nice as cable, but cheaper) for basic internet use and a real phone line will be easier to use and more reliable that than needing a computer and software to run a phone.

As much as cable internet would be nice, I don't think it will be used enough to justify the cost.

The only issue would be us wanting to stream live from the Club. You have a good point about the real phone though, maybe DSL is the right choice.

Maybe you can come up with some mathematical computations on the reliability of DSL service? :)

I am sad to say I have DSL at my house. Here are my speed test numbers.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 3296 kbps (412 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 480 kbps (60 KB/sec transfer rate)

Adequate. Let's get a quote from the telephone company.

Stefan Garr sent me lots of great info and a cable quote. I think for 42 bucks this might be the nuts. Details soon. Thanks SG!
