Straight Pool

Postby frasethatpayz on Fri Nov 07, 2008 9:56 am

I don't know if it is just me, but I have seen quite a few people playing straight pool lately. Has anyone else seen this?

Straight pool is a great game and a good game to practice. It helps with patterns, position, cluster management and there is pressure on ever shot. What I really like about playing straight pool is the challenge to run a high number and trying to better that mark every time. Sometimes we are successful and other times we are not, but I would rather try and fail than to not try at all.

Does anyone have any high runs they would like to post?

Have you run over 50, 75, 100, 125, 150?

I also forgot to add the Blaine Bengals defeated Eden Prairie last night in State Quarter Final football action.

Good going guys!

I would like to think the increase in straight pool around the cities has something to do with the work I've done the past year or so with the MNSPA. Opening 14.1 leagues, and practically begging everyone I see to play the game.

My current high run is 38. Nothing spectacular about that compared to others, but it is mine, so I hold it dear. But, if given the opportunity, I will ravage my dear 38 with the intensity of a cat in heat laden with catnip. It would be better if it was 37, right Rossaroni?

Sadly, I haven't come close to my high run in the past few months, but have noticed my per inning average go up to about 7-12 if I'm in stroke (or just staying in the 0-2 ball range if I'm not).

My high run is 66 at the moment, though I rarely run into the 3rd rack... I love playing straight pool and used to play weekly with friends in the Cities for the last couple of years... I almost always got a game os straight pool at shooters on the weekends... I think that the game is alive an well, if you ask someone to play. The only drawback is it that it takes a hours to play - so people with time to kill, and are older and wiser, are more willing to play.

Having moved to Duluth, I use straight pool for practice. I had the opportunity to play against Mike Miller in a short race to 75, and he almost ran out on me... he did in the second inning. He used to play regularly years ago and I just think that a different generation is making the other games more prevalent. Straight pool afficiandos are still there, you just need to speak up.

I do see more straight pool being played. We have a league (sanctioned nationally by 14and1.com) affiliated with Matt's MN Straight Pool Association playing down here at Shooters on Sunday afternoons. Quite often I can get in a game during most afternoons down here. A few years ago, that was unheard of.

Have not played straight pool for many years. High run 114, but not for 20 years. Most player seem to have lost patience for this game since nine ball took over, now 8 ball leagues. Best game to learn all phases of the game.Never played 8 ball bar box back then but could play it reasonably well just because of pattern play learned in straight pool.

I ran 527 once, but it was just in practice. Is this pretty good?

That's alright... if you keep practicing, I know you can do better!
